What your job will be like:
Under the general supervision of the Hall A work coordinator, and Lead Technicians, works within a group or alone, on all mechanical aspects of experiments and installations in the Hall and Test Laboratories. Responsible for overall quality and schedule of their own work. Supports systems during beam operation, as well as installation and deinstallation of Hall experiments. Stores experimental equipment as needed.

In this role you will:

  • Complete mechanical drawings, equipment fabrication and assembly utilizing conventional machine tools, such as CNC milling machine, lathe, drill presses and band saws.
  • Work with technicians in Hall A to install and perform maintenance of vacuum systems, beam line components and cryogenic transfer systems for nitrogen and helium.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment used for scientific research.
    Read and interpret drawings in areas such as electronics, mechanical, and cryogenic systems.
  • Operate cranes, forklifts, trucks with trailers and aerial platforms
  • Provide technical support for staff, users, and college students conducting research in Experimental Hall A
  • Serve as part of a rotational on-call that is design to support the current and upcoming experiment needs. Must be available to work overtime or shift work as required

Qualifications we require:


  • High School diploma


  • 5 years relevant experience of equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in completing assignments and demonstrate the ability to understand instructions
  • Proficient in the use of hand and power tools and have the skill to operate forklifts, truck and trailer, overhead cranes and aerial platforms
  • Ability to provide clear and concise communication both written and verbal
  • Utilize basic computer knowledge to carryout daily functions, e.g., check/send emails, fill out timesheet, order tools/parts, complete web-based training
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment
  • Ability to lead others in completing tasks/projects with limited decision making authority using established protocols

Knowledge, Skills Abilities preferred:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with TIG and/or MIG welding, plus knowledge of advanced welding equipment is required
