What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Mechanical Engineering Group as a Mechanical Engineer III, with a focus on accelerator component and system design and engineering. At Jefferson Lab, our Engineering Division advances accelerator technology, and our talented staff work on the most complex system designs. You will also collaborate with a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians in the design, procurement, fabrication, test, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of systems that are instrumental in the performance of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project, and accelerators worldwide.

In this role you will...

  • Lead a team of designers and other engineers in the development of new components and systems.
  • Design and analyze systems and components employed in particle accelerators systems to include; SRF components, cryomodules, normal conducting magnets, superconducting magnets, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, cooling water systems, gas systems, precision alignment elements, and equipment support structures.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff in technical and professional development.
  • Perform engineering analyses including heat transfer, fluid flow, vibration, and stress analysis.
  • Utilize CAE tools such as finite element analysis software (ANSYS).
  • Design systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including ASME piping, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes, and JLab Pressure and Vacuum System Rules.
  • Present technical results in status reports, at design reviews, and at technical conferences.
  • Serve as the responsible technical representative for the design, procurement, and fabrication of components and systems.
  • Document the final design, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of assigned systems.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 10 years of relevant work experience in the design, analysis, and fabrication of complex mechanical systems.
  • Experience supervising staff – setting and managing expectations, performance, and professional development


  • A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in large-scale accelerator projects or facilities is highly desirable.
  • Experience in leading a project with cost and schedule responsibilities.
