WORK LOCATION TYPE: Hybrid (combination of on-site and remote work based on business needs)

This is a 2 YEAR TERM POSITION

What your job will be like:

Working with the scientific and technical staff of the Center for Injectors and Sources, the incumbent in this position will participate in developing spin-polarized photocathodes for high voltage photo-guns used in particle accelerators, important to the success of the experimental programs at Jefferson Lab and future Electron-Ion Collider to be constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The incumbent will spend much of his/her time performing research which involves the design, fabrication or testing of photocathodes samples. These activities are closely coupled to on-going collaborations with university, industry and other national laboratories.

At Jefferson Lab key technical areas include the design and fabrication of highly spin-polarized GaAs heterostructures and characterizing their performance, especially in one of two experimental areas; a “bench top” micro-Mott polarimeter for the spectral characterization of photocathode quantum efficiency and spin-polarization; and a high-voltage photo-gun and beam line in the Upgraded Injector Test Facility for performing beam experiments under high voltage operating conditions.

The incumbent also has the opportunity to participate with the group’s other operational and R&D activities which involve alternative electron emitter materials, lasers, vacuum and high-voltage systems.

In this role you will:

  • Perform analytic, numeric and experimental research in electron emission by photocathodes
  • Perform independent and collaborative scientific research.
  • Communicates scientific results clearly and orally at meetings.
  • Explains results in technical documents (papers or technical notes).
  • Presents conclusions at meetings, conferences, workshops and peer reviewed journals.

Qualifications We Require:

Education:

A Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related engineering discipline and specific training is required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Software used for modeling materials (e.g. COMSOL)
  • Software used for data acquisition (e.g. LabView)
  • Analytic or analysis skills (e.g. derivations and statistics)
  • Computational skills (e.g. coding Monte Carlo techniques)

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with further technologies of photo-injectors (lasers, electronics, radio-frequency, vacuum, high voltage, electric/magnetic fields)

Please upload your resume, cover letter and at least 2 reference letters in a single document and attach to your application. If documents are received following the submission of your application, they can be sent to Tristan Jones at tristan@ jlab.org.
