What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? At Jefferson Lab, our Engineering Division provides technical services to the entire lab to support ongoing accelerator operations and other lab initiatives. We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Cryogenics Group as a Fabrication/Welding Technician. In this position, you will lead and coordinate various cryogenic fabrication and installation projects as well as provide counsel in support of the engineering and design staff requesting guidance on best practices. Responsible for fabricating, welding, and installing components while directing and mentoring less skilled, junior technicians. Work within the fabrication group to ensure the highest level of quality is achieved on all projects. This includes active involvement in planning, organizing the workforce, and providing regular updates to management on the progress of work based on schedule.

In this role, you will:

  • Fabricate complex cryogenic components. All assignments require the ability to understand and follow engineering instructions, be highly proficient at reading and understanding fabrication drawings, and utilize high-level fabrication skills on a regular basis. Fabricate new components, oversee and participate in new installations, and participate or coordinate field repairs and modifications to the cryogenic systems. This work can be independent or with a team of individuals.
  • Consult with other fabrication teams within and outside the cryogenics department on difficult fabrication tasks.
  • Participate in the installation and removal of u-tubes to support the operations group and the mission of the lab. You will be responsible for ensuring these evolutions are done safely and in accordance with written work control documentation.
  • Evaluate the skills of newer welding and fabrication staff and ensure they perform their tasks in accordance with all appropriate safety, fabrication, and welding policies.
  • Provide independent technical leadership as a team senior technician. Work with scientific, engineering, and other technical staff in order to provide fabrication and testing support for cryogenic production-related activities.

Qualifications We Require

  • High School Diploma
  • 9 years of relevant experience including machine tools (Lathe, Mill, Drill Press, etc.) Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A thorough knowledge of both Jefferson Lab welding/brazing procedures and associated national standards such as the ASME (SEC IX) welding qualifications. This shall include the ability to create and maintain the QA documentation required for compliance to the ESH&Q policies.
  • Working knowledge of Jefferson Lab pressure systems requirements.
  • Proven skills to qualify and perform the welding required for cryogenic activities and the relevant examinations as required by the ESH&Q policy and procedures.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of the cryogenics and laboratory computer systems, including all standard site wide programs such as SRL, EHS&Q, timesheet, etc.
  • Extensive skills in metal fabrication such as a metal fabricator or sheet metal mechanic
