What your job will be like:

You will be responsible for planning, organizing, and accomplishing the operation, maintenance, construction, and modification of all facility fire detection and suppression systems. Fire suppression systems include wet and dry pipe, pre-action sprinklers, total flooding clean agent, and portable fire extinguishers. Fire detection systems include, but are not limited to, spot smoke and heat detection devices, linear heat detection, video flame and smoke detectors, flammable gas sensors and extensive use of VESDA early warning smoke detection. Other associated systems include voice evacuation, emergency notification alarm communication and area of refuge communication.

In this role you will:

  • Be responsible for the fire protection of Jefferson Lab’s facilities and experimental programs. Maintains Jefferson Lab’s Fire Protection Program to satisfy the requirements of Department of Energy (DOE) orders and related directives. Participates in the experimental reviews including readiness reviews to ensure appropriate life safety and fire protection features are integrated into the planning and conduct of experiments.
  • May be designated Jefferson Lab’s authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for issuance of permits, review and approval of construction documents and shop drawings, acceptance of new fire protection and life safety features and approval of occupancy of new and modified facilities, and interpretation of building and fire codes. Reviews fire protection equivalencies and exemptions and recommends approval to DOE. Defines the facility program of inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems. Provides technical support to the Facilities Operations and Maintenance Department for corrective maintenance.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance and operation of existing systems to maintain reliable operations. Conducts and maintains periodic Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA) of mission-essential areas of the lab and building assessments to ensure the fire protection features of each structure remain appropriate for the buildings use and changing experimental program. Provides support to in-house staff, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Perform troubleshooting to identify source of problems and develops solutions. Determines the most appropriate means of maintaining fire protection systems through the use of service, design, and construction contracts. Evaluation shall include timeliness, minimization of operational impacts, and cost effectiveness. Maintains statistical data for the department ensuring performance meets or exceeds goals.
  • Environmental Health & Safety Responsibilities: Documents and updates Jefferson Lab’s Fire Protection Program in the ES&H Manual. Oversees the requirements and procedures of the Hot Work Permit program and fire extinguisher training. Ensures staff and subcontractors are fully aware of their individual responsibilities to meet Lab policies to promote a safe, healthy and environmentally sound work area. Ensures appropriate ES&H provisions are incorporated into all work. Activity hazard analyses are performed and documented prior to start of work, as required. Develops and/or modifies procedures to execute ES&H regulations and lessons learned. Maintains an environmentally sound and safe workplace for area of responsibility. Reports unsafe conditions to management for corrective action(s) that exceed the incumbent’s personal ability to correct. Enforces the Laboratory ES&H requirements in the execution of all assigned duties.
  • Be responsible for maintenance, inspection, testing, and maintaining accurate records for all elevators on site.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required
  • 22 or more years required
  • 10 or more years of experience in fire protection operations, and maintenance required,
  • 3 or more years with a minimum of experience in the management of fire safety programs required,
  • Successful experience in supervising both professional and non-professional staff required.

Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of various building and fire codes and the ability to research and interpret the code requirement
  • Ability to manage and update a fire safety program for a campus environment
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and apply innovative and creative solutions to complex problems
  • Analytical ability to evaluate options and make optimal decisions
  • Ability to negotiate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to mentor

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Bachelor's Degree in fire protection engineering preferred
    • Certified Fire Protection Specialist is highly preferred upon hire
