What your job will be like:
Under general supervision, the Safety Systems Engineer serves as a key member of the Environment Safety and Health Department tasked to ensure facilities, equipment and processes are designed and implemented to mitigate worker hazards to the greatest extent possible. Focus areas include fall protection, ladders/scaffolding, pressure systems safety, chemical processing safety and other industrial workplace hazards. Develop policies, procedures and training to eliminate and mitigate those hazards. Ensure JSA compliance with all appropriate contractual and regulatory requirements, and execute lab-wide policy, procedures and initiatives. Provide direct support to line organizations during work planning and execution. Significant focus on technology-based solutions to include data management, information network development and systems engineering to improve departmental efficiency and hazard recognition.

In this role you will:

  • Serve on teams responsible for the design of various civil, structural, mechanical systems and projects with a focus on identifying potential hazards to both construction/fabrication workers and end-users.
  • Partner with designers to eliminate or mitigate those potential hazards through design revision.
  • Support the effort of providing technology related solutions to better capture safety inspections, industry changes, job planning and internal product development.
  • May mentor staff as assigned and work productively with staff from across all organizations and levels as well as Department of Energy staff.

Qualification We Require:

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering (mechanical, structural, chemical, or closely related field)

Experience

  • 4 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated success evaluating and mitigating industrial hazard risk and assuring regulatory compliance
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA standards
  • Documented success managing efforts leading to risk reduction, regulatory compliance and implementation of best practices

Qualifications we Desire:

  • Knowledge of safety program management related to 10 CFR 851
  • Other Federal safety program implementation
  • Education or training associated with the application of Prevention through Design or Safety by Design
  • Strong computer-based skills, including Microsoft Office, and must be self-sufficient in data analysis
