What your job will be like:

The SRF Fabrication Engineer will independently manage projects from inception to successful completion on a wide variety of assignments within the SRF department including all aspects of electron beam transport including superconducting radio frequency cavity and ancillary fabricated components. Work will encompass practical solutions to complex problems which may include mechanical design (CAD), acquisition of parts and materials, interaction with SRF scientists, engineers, technicians and vendors, recommendation of and overseeing fabrication processes, assembly, installation and commissioning as required.

In this role you will:

  • Determine and recommend fabrication methods and processes to enable successful completion of final product within quality requirements, cost and schedule
  • Coordinate fabrication of prototype R&D cavities and other components, including development of new and appropriate processes, tooling and procedures
  • Solve materials engineering problems for SRF cavities and other beamline components as they relate to performance, forming, surfaces, coatings and contamination
  • Produce and document fabrication processes for components and mechanical systems associated with high performing SRF cavities and cryomodules, including electron beam welding, brazing/sputtering and coatings
  • Design and coordinate fabrication of mechanical components, fabrication dies, tooling and fixtures
  • Operate engineering tools such as CAD and multivariable analysis software to model and provide practical solutions to complex problems
  • Develop and implement new and optimized mechanical components for SRF systems employed in advanced accelerators
  • Develop detailed specifications and quality control documentation for fabrication systems, tooling and mechanical components.

Qualifications We Require

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Materials Engineering.

Experience

  • 10 years of Relevant Experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • In-depth understanding of mechanical engineering principles and fundamentals.
    • Familiarity with metal fabrication technical requirements, equipment, methods and processes.
    • Familiarity with LabView and EPICS.
    • Knowledgeable in the use of CAD and multivariable analysis software in analyzing and producing solutions to mechanical problems.
    • Ability to assist plan, direct, and coordinate activities and resources in a manufacturing environment in accordance with cost, quality, and quantity specifications.
    • Able to work in collaboration with others to solve complex problems.
    • Able to take direction and work under supervision to carry out tasks and solve problems of limited complexity.
    • Able to communicate effectively the results and challenges of on-going projects to fellow staff and management in both oral and written form.
    • Ability to train, coach, and lead technical staff on task and projects with limited complexity.

    Qualifications We Prefer

    • Ph.D. in Mechanical or Materials Engineering.
