What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Mechanical Engineering Group as a Mechanical Engineer II who will work under consultative direction toward long range goals and objectives (and frequently self-initiated), is engaged in initiating, designing, developing, executing, and implementing engineering/scientific research and/or support projects. Work requires the application of theoretical principles and creative/analytical techniques typically acquired in a recognized four-year or more academic course of study. Applies advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical problems involving work on multiple highly sophisticated major projects requiring innovative, original solutions. Initiates planning, organizing, performing, coordinating and/or advising of engineering work. Performs technical studies including the planning of multiple projects simultaneously. Estimates, tracks and completes project activities on time and within budget. Remains abreast of and consults on technical advancements. Identifies and consistently uses the most efficient and standard methodologies to carry out processes; constantly assesses their efficiency and suitability. May develop theories for understanding, characterizing and organizing natural phenomena into a systematic and significant pattern for research into potential new products or inventions. May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts.

In this role you will...

  • Design and analyze systems and components employed in particle accelerators systems to include Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) components, cryo modules, normal conducting magnets, superconducting magnets, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, cooling water systems, gas systems, precision alignment elements, and equipment support structures.
  • Perform engineering analyses including heat transfer, fluid flow, vibration, and stress analysis.
  • Apply CAE tools such as finite element analysis software (ANSYS) as needed. Maintain proficiency in the use of the software so that these tasks can be done in a timely fashion.
  • Design systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including: ASME piping, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes, and JLab Pressure and Vacuum System Rules.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff in technical and professional development
  • Direct a team of designers and other engineers in the development of new system designs. Generate the designs using 3D CAD (NX) models and document the design with 2D fabrication drawings.
  • Present technical status reports, defend designs at engineering design and safety reviews
  • Serve as the responsible technical representative for the design, procurement and fabrication of subcontracted components. Work with external vendors as necessary to ensure quality systems and components are fabricated, inspected, and delivered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university,
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience (Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to effectively train people outside his/her work group
  • Able to give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams
  • Can write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption.
