What your job will be like:
As a Mechanical Engineer in the Facilities Engineering Group, you will be responsible for a broad range of duties in accomplishing the design and modification of various facility mechanical systems and managing design efforts from other staff mechanical engineers.
You will also perform Mechanical Engineer System Expert (SE) duties such as oversight/management of mechanical systems, improving system reliability, system project backlog management, adherence to design standards, maintaining configuration control and performing energy management initiatives and studies.
In this role, you will:
- Function as the Mechanical Engineer Design and Project Manager to include:
- Developing plans and specifications for building renovations, new building designs and independent mechanical systems.
- Preparing Scope of Work documents, design estimates and technical support fees and provide contract oversight of Architect-Engineer resources.
- Providing mechanical engineering support in the development of requirements for capital projects.
- Assisting construction project managers when evaluating construction and engineering contract change requests.
- Responding, as needed, after normal work hours for mechanical system interruption that requires design expertise. The response may include an on-site presence or an ability to accept on-call duties.
- Function as the Mechanical Engineer System Expert, to include:
- Acting as a Subject Matter Expert in multiple sub systems in areas of specialization.
- Assisting in the development of a prioritized list of backlog projects to improve or maintain system reliability. This should have a 5-10 year outlook at a minimum and should also include system replacement when beyond expected service life.
- Aligning design efforts to ensure system configuration control is maintained.
- Assisting in the execution of mechanical system Condition Assessments. Ensure the asset profile for the system is accurately captured in the Condition Assessment Information System (CAIS) and Maximo.
- Participating in mechanical system energy management studies making proposals and implementing projects enabling the Lab to comply with DOE energy goals.
Qualifications We Require:
Education:
- BS degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other closely related technical degree.
Experience:
- 10 years of relevant experience
Certifications:
- PE registration (Must be registered in Virginia with 9 months of hire).
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Extensive experience in the design of HVAC, industrial and chilled water and low conductivity water systems for research facilities. Detail knowledge of mechanical and control system design and operation for centralized mechanical facilities (cooling tower systems, chilled water systems, low conductivity water systems) consisting of multiple major system component serving numerous buildings and site systems.
- Solid technical background in mechanical systems, and the ability to identify and manage issues before they become detrimental to the success of the programs or peripheral programs. Is able to routinely interact or represent Jefferson Lab’s capabilities to senior management, key clients and stakeholders
- Comprehensive understanding of effective project management practices and principles and demonstrates proficiency in applying a disciplined approach to project management.
- Display high level of initiative and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with clear expectations and timelines.
- Able to give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams.
- Ability to present and express ideas and information clearly and in a manner appropriate for the audience, facilitate the open exchange of information, and skillfully negotiates solutions with the customer, staff, subcontractors, and other agencies.
- Able to write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption.
- Demonstrated management experience including initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing processes as well as effective staff management and development skills
- Typical related management experience should include, initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing processes.
- Extensive experience in the management of major construction and maintenance projects.
- Extensive knowledge of construction and industrial safety/environmental practices.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Master's degree is preferred.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
- Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certification preferred.
