What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Mechanical Engineering Group as a Mechanical Designer I, with a focus on accelerator component and system design. At Jefferson Lab, our Engineering Division advances accelerator technology and our talented staff work on the most complex system designs. You will also collaborate with a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians in the design, procurement, fabrication, test, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of systems that are instrumental in the performance of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project, and accelerators worldwide.


In this role, you will...

  • Under the direction of an engineer and lead designer, design systems and components employed in particle accelerators to include SRF components, cryomodules, normal conducting magnets, superconducting magnets, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, cooling water systems, gas systems, precision alignment elements, and equipment support structures.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of design and drafting techniques with Siemens NX and AutoCAD software to create complex models and drawings of components and assemblies.
  • Have practical experience producing orthographic mechanical and fabrication drawings.
  • Understand and appropriately apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.


Qualifications We Require:

  • High School Graduate
    • 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in the drafting and design field.

    Desired qualifications:

    • Experience in designing cryogenic systems, vacuum systems, piping systems, and/or cryostats
    • Experience in machining and/or metal fabrication
    • Experience in process plant and equipment design

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Performs work with regular supervision.
    • Ability to identify and resolve problems of moderate complexity.
    • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
