Work Location Type: Hybrid (combination of on and off-site work based on business needs)

Come join our team at Jefferson Lab, where great minds matter.

What your job will be like:

You will assist research scientists in developing a detailed design for an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) for cooling hadrons in the Electron-Ion Collider being built at Brookhaven National Laboratory. You will use accelerator beamline design tools such as BMAD, Elegant, or Impact-T to help derive the detailed design for the accelerator. The work entails running start-to-end simulations of the machine and varying inputs to allow the specification of component numbers, locations, and detailed system requirements. You will eventually use a virtual machine to help develop commissioning plans and procedures for the real machine. Other simulation tools will be used to study the effects of instabilities, the development of halo, and amplification of noise.

This position is a 2-year term contract with possible an extension to a 3rd year, subjected to availability funding. Partial relocation assistance is provided, as well as visa assistance (Jefferson Lab will not sponsor H-1Bs for this position).

In this role, you will:

  • Simulate complex accelerator systems independently, or as part of a team.
  • Complete beam dynamics and optics simulations.
  • Document progress and codes, as well as be familiar with version control concepts.
  • Document work for publication in papers and tech notes.
  • Communicate and work as a part of a diverse team, as well as represent the work in conferences and workshops.

Qualification We Require:

Education:

  • Relevant PhD

Experience:

  • Not Required

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with simulation codes is very useful. Previous attendance at USPAS or CERN accelerator school is also very valuable for this position.
  • Experience with machine development and construction
  • Though most of the work will be simulations and calculations, some prototyping might eventually be required and experimental experience
  • The ability to work with and mentor students
  • Experience with virtual machines or artificial intelligence
