Work Location Type: Flexible On-site (working more than 60% on-site)

What your job will be like:

Is your passion in engineering and system components while enabling groundbreaking science? Jefferson Lab seeks a self-motivated Survey Engineer to join the Survey and Alignment Group within the Engineering Division. As a member of the Alignment team, you will be responsible for providing engineering support associated with the precision alignment of components in a particle accelerator. This will include carrying out data preparation, reduction, and analysis, as well as exercising technical judgment in planning, organizing, performing, and/or coordinating specific installation jobs.

The candidate should have the ability to understand and perform survey computations, coordinate transformations and least squares adjustments; and be able to accurately read and interpret mechanical drawings to generate ideal coordinates and resolve design issues.

In the SE-II role, you will...

  • Oversee and maintain the major survey networks used across the lab.
  • Provide the Survey and Alignment group with the necessary data that define the ideal location of components for accelerator and experimental installations.
  • Work with engineers, designers, and physicists to keep track of changes during new installations.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of ideal coordinates and ensure that the data is accurate and readily accessible to alignment personnel and those outside the group who need access to it.
  • Perform the reduction and analysis of survey results that are both accurate and timely.

In the SE-I role, you will...

  • Help to prepare clear and concise data for use by the field crews and customers, including data reduction, adjustment, and analysis of results in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Develop a working knowledge of software packages used by the group. This includes developing proficiency in Spatial Analyzer software with a view to fully understanding its capabilities.
  • Be actively involved in fieldwork providing field crew support when conditions and manpower needs warrant. Design and executing surveys that minimize potential errors and align machine components to specified tolerances in a concise and timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

For SE II

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geodesy, or related technical field from an accredited university.
  • 4 years of relevant work experience in high-precision surveying.

Desired:

  • A Master’s degree in a related technical field is preferred.
  • Experience in geodetic network design, least squares adjustment methods, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience in accelerator alignment.

For SE I

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geodesy or related technical field from an accredited university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for SE I and SE II:

  • Principles and practices of accelerator alignment or metrology, including geodetic network design theory, least squares adjustment methods, and statistical analysis.
  • Principles of surveying, including instrument and measurement errors, (e.g. electronic distance measurement, geodetic leveling, triangulation, etc.).
  • Experience with laser trackers, theodolites, precision levels and portable coordinate measurement machines, and instrument calibration techniques.
