What your job will be like:

The HPDF Science Director is responsible for identifying potential Users for the computational facility, evaluating and managing requirements/needs, developing a user community within the integrated research infrastructure, and advising on the scale, scope, and design of the facility needed to support the new program’s objectives. This role reports to the HPDF Hub Facility Director, and will work closely with the HPDF integrated project team, and Program Manager at the Office of Science. The HPDF Science director manages User Facility and cross-laboratory collaboration with a scope of significant size critical to the project, facility, and Lab’s success. The successful candidate will apply a high level of expertise in planning, guiding and providing direction for large, highly complex, multi-stakeholder scientific ecosystems, and demonstrates independent initiative in determining solutions to the most complex problems where there may be limited precedents. Able to coalesce solutions and maintain momentum in ambiguity. Sets strategic plans for the function in alignment with project, divisional and Lab goals. Will build and manage a team of scientific and technical staff, and manage their growth, budget and performance accordingly. Oversees ancillary projects to assure compliance with budgetary, technical, and schedule goals.

In this role you will:

  • Engage with and build the scientific User community to optimize the design and use of the HPDF and associated Spokes
  • Work with the program office and project team to align, prioritize, and communicate program and user requirements
  • Work with Facility Director to guide the setting, planning, implementing, and analyzing facility objectives and priorities; able to develop a compelling vision for the future of the facility
  • Grow, develop, and performance manage a research and support department to support the User community, providing outreach, training, scientific application development, and User support
  • Understands the national research environment; may evaluate and integrate emerging priorities from major research organizations
  • Participate in strategic leadership planning that shapes the design and use of the HPDF within the integrated research infrastructure; creating user-represented, impactful strategies for the HPDF’s capabilities
  • Develop and execute to key performance parameters that satisfy the scientific objectives of the facility
  • Prepare and persuasively deliver executive level presentations and reports
  • Works with Communications Office on meeting/workshop planning and coordination and to develop science communication outreach; able to generate action items, outcomes, and reporting information from workshops that can be used for stakeholder engagement/information and project reporting/tracking purposes
  • Attendance at Program Office update meetings (such as ASCAC, BESAC, etc) to stay informed on latest program developments from DOE Office of Science
  • Extensive reading and awareness of the developments in data intensive science, artificial intelligence for science, machine learning, advanced research computing, privacy of data etc.

      Qualifications We Require:

      • Master's degree in Computer Science, or other relevant information STEM field
      • 15 years of experience in relevant field or combination of experience, education, and achievement
      • Experience managing scientific and technical professionals; growth, performance, and financial management
        • Experience with the DOE Office of Science and its related programs

          Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

          • Advanced and demonstrated planning, budgeting, problem solving, decision making, analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
          • Developed leadership, managerial, interface, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
          • Advanced knowledge of techniques for application of computation to science research.
          • Recognized by the science community for expertise in relevant areas of computation in support of science.

          Qualifications We Desire:

          • Has served as a principal investigator on federally-funded research
          • Ability to build and develop a team of scientific and technical support staff
