What your job will be like:

Jefferson Lab seeks a candidate for system design, integration, and operation of software infrastructure services in the Scientific Computing environment. These services include highly available, containerized capabilities in direct support of HPC, HTC, and the experimental physics program.

This is a Linux based position. A knowledge of Linux system administration, IP networking, containerization and workflow orchestration is essential. The incumbent must be comfortable writing code to integrate diverse systems, including complex network capabilities, authentication and authorization frameworks, complex workflow scheduling, and resource accounting. The ability to plan for future capacity, identify and mitigate potential failure modes, and maintain highly available operation are essential planning skills.

In this role you will:

  • Collaboratively design and implement software infrastructure in support of High Performance and High Throughput computing using best-in-class containerization and orchestration tools.
  • Monitor, maintain, and operate infrastructure for scientific computing services.
  • Create highly available services through consideration of the entire stack from hardware and networking though the user application.
  • Engage with users to meet service requirements for performance and availability.
  • Develop software to address gaps in existing tools.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's from an accredited University in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Math with significant Computer Science coursework.
  • 3 Years of in-depth experience in relevant infrastructure development.
  • Prior experience in Linux System Administration.
  • Prior experience in cloud technologies, containerization frameworks, and workflow orchestration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to develop, debug, and test applications based upon design and performance requirements.
  • Expert Kubernetes, Docker, and containerization administration experience.
  • Experience performing Unix System Administration tasks including installation, configuration, and support of COTS/GOTS/FOSS software, file, network, and storage systems.
  • Experience operating in a production environment with high availability requirements.
  • Ability to write code to automate system administration tasks in bash and python.
  • Knowledge of Linux system administration including installation and configuration management.
  • Experience with automating test procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing (e.g., email, presentations, drawings) and explain work to their supervisor and others in the group.
  • Ability to work effectively with peers and participate in participate in troubleshooting, including off-hours during outages and as part of an occasional on-call rotation.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master's in computer science.
  • Network programming experience with TCP/IP.
  • Experience with HPC open-source parallel programming language tools.
  • General HPC technical knowledge regarding compute, network, memory, and storage components.
  • Familiarity with InfiniBand data center fabrics.
  • Experience with Parallel file systems such as Lustre.
  • Experience with XRootD storage.
  • Experience with HTCondor.
