What your job will be like:
Jefferson Lab has an opening for an upper level Magnet Engineer position to design, specify, fabricate, and procure normal and/or superconducting (SC) magnets and help define and design magnet system interfaces including interfaces with other magnets. The successful candidate will be assigned as a project team member primarily for MOLLER and EIC working on magnet projects, along with magnet systems with experimental hall, and other related experimental equipment. In this role you will:

  • Manage individual magnet development projects in response to the needs of the CEBAF
  • Develop magnets and associated component systems from initial concept through CAD, detailed 3D modeling and design
  • Support the development of purchase specifications and fabrication drawings, system interface documents, magnet fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning
  • Conduct testing to include detailed magnetic measurement, analysis of results, design adjustments, and alignment.
  • Work independently and to interact with and report to the group leader, senior engineering and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support
  • Publish and present research at conferences or journals

Qualifications We Require:

Education:

  • Relevant Bachelors Degree in physics, engineering, or other relevant discipline from an accredited university

Experience:

At least 10 years of experience with:

  • the design of accelerator/detector magnets or similar magnet systems
  • engineering analysis tools such as FEA software and/or OPERA/TOSCA, multi-physics engineering analysis
  • creative engineering projects collaborating with a team to develop and build scientific equipment

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • A demonstrably strong analytical analysis background.
  • Ability to understand complex problems and to collaborate and explore and implement alternative solutions
  • Experience with 3D modeling
  • Experience with superconducting magnets and/or cryogenic systems and components
  • Proficient in ANSYS or equivalent thermal and stress engineering analysis software and generating engineering analysis reports
  • Experience in ANSYS MAXWELL
  • Experience in nonlinear finite element analysis and eddy current analysis.
  • Experience in cryogenic engineering
  • Experience/expertise in magnetic measurement systems and equipment
  • Experience in medium to large scale magnet fabrication and installation
  • Ability to work independently and to interact with and report group leader, senior engineering, engineering and scientific staff
  • Ability to positively interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals
  • Project development and management skills
