What your job will be like:
The Jefferson Lab Environment Safety and Health (ES&H) Division is seeking an expert on accelerator radiation safety to lead and serve as the chief subject matter expert for the Jefferson Lab Accelerator Safety Program. The incumbent will ensure compliance with DOE Order 420.2D Safety of Accelerator Facilities. The ES&H Program Manager for Accelerator Safety will be responsible for maintaining the safety basis documentation (including associated subject areas) and ensuring the accuracy and quality of all formal documentation and DOE SC-TJNAF transmittals associated with the program.
In this role you will:
- Chair the Safety Configuration Management Board (SCMB). Oversee the implementation of the Unreviewed Safety Issue (USI) process to evaluate proposed facility modifications, new activities or discovered conditions to determine if associated accelerator related hazards are appropriately addressed by existing safety analysis.
- Coordinate with facility operations staff, scientists, and TJSO facilities representative to assist in the development and implementation of safety bases, analysis of policies, practices, and procedures.
- Meet existing challenges and respond to emerging accelerator safety issues to support operations and mission need.
- Ensure that safety assessment documents and accelerator safety envelopes are revised and updated as needed and in compliance with associated requirements.
- Develop and maintain the laboratory’s accelerator safety program description. Monitor the laboratory's implementation of other programs and policies that functionally impact accelerator safety. Participate in program assessment and quality assurance activities, and maintain records related to assignment and nuclear safety.
- Provide accelerator safety related training to system engineers, system owners, and system operators responsible for safety related credited controls. Provide technical training for lab staff in accelerator safety analysis development, implementation, and maintenance.
- Provides safety analysis support to researchers and facility management organizations associated with accelerator facilities that operate below 10 MeV per DOE O 420.2D.
- Support review processes to meet 420.2D 5-year review intervals, support other internal review processes related to Internal Readiness Reviews (IRRs), and support internal/external review processes related to Accelerator Readiness Reviews (ARRs).
- Maintain and foster strong relationships with the DOE Accelerator community and participate in program assessments and reviews at other accelerator laboratories. Support the Accelerator safety workshop effort by contributing to and attending annual workshops.
Qualifications We Require:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related scientific field. A Master's Degree is preferred.

Experience:
- 15 or more years applied accelerator safety field experience within the DOE complex.

Relevant experience may not be substituted for education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with DOE (i.e., 10CFR835), NRC (i.e., 10CFR20) or Agreement State occupational radiation protection regulations and applicable standards.
- Experience performing or evaluating hazards analyses or radiological shielding designs.
- Excellent teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with Monte Carlo simulation codes (e.g., MCNP, FLUKA, etc.) and their use in validating facility shielding.
- Demonstrated experience and excellent working knowledge of DOE Safety of Accelerators Orders (DOE O 420.2D).
- Experience in developing program descriptions and associated guidance.
Certifications:

Specialized certifications such as National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT), Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or successful completion of one part of the American Board of Health Physics Certification (CHP) examination, preferred.
