What your job will be like:

We are seeking self-motivated individuals to join the Mechanical Engineering Group as Mechanical Designers/Drafters for EIC. These positions call for applicants who have a proven track record of generating complex designs such as magnets, structures, testing equipment, mechanisms, machine components, vacuum equipment, electro-mechanical devices, piping systems, and cryostats. The designers will be tasked to turn concepts and ideas into working assemblies and systems with independent thinking. The designers will be required to plan work assignments and maintain schedules. In addition, the designers may be tasked to follow projects through purchasing, fabrication, and installation.

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is the next large-scale Department of Energy nuclear physics user facility to be built in the United States. It will be hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and is expected to start operation within the next 10 – 12 years. The EIC Project received Critical Decision CD-1 in June 2021 initiating the engineering and design phase. Jefferson Lab is a major partner in the EIC Project and is providing significant contributions to the overall project management as well as the design and construction of RF systems, cryogenics systems, electron injector and storage ring electro-magnets, and experimental detector systems.

EIC Technology Areas:

  • Normal conducting electro-magnets
  • Superconducting electro-magnets
  • Accelerator beamlines, vacuum systems, and diagnostics
  • Detector systems and support structures
  • Cryogenic plant equipment and distribution systems
  • Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) Cryomodules
