Jefferson Lab is seeking bright and ambitious mechanical technicians to join our technical team to play a vital role in the construction, testing and installation of complex experimental equipment at our world-class research facility. The laboratory is currently building several new, large scientific instruments including magnet systems, vacuum systems, and a variety of particle detectors. This often includes prototypes, setups and infrastructure to enable test measurements. You will have an opportunity to learn, develop, and perfect your skills in areas including parts fabrication, equipment assembly, troubleshooting and repair, performance testing, running diagnostics, and many other exciting disciplines. In this role you will:

TECH I

  • Be a member of the EIC detector technical team that is responsible for the building and testing of various detector-related experimental equipment and test setups, and the installation and removal of such equipment
  • Work with other electro-mechanical technicians to perform maintenance, troubleshoot, or repair equipment used for scientific research
  • Serve as part of rotational teams that may require on-call duties to support the ongoing activities within the EIC project and as needed other projects within Jefferson Lab
  • Expand your knowledge in areas such as electronics, vacuum systems, material handling, and cryogenics
  • Provide technical support for staff, users, and college students conducting research at Jefferson Lab.
  • Utilize basic computer knowledge to carryout daily functions, e.g., check/send emails, fill out timesheet, order tools/parts, complete web-based training, etc,
  • Adhere to performance expectations and training that will provide you the greatest opportunity for success

TECH II

  • Be responsible for the building, testing, installation and removal of experimental equipment
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment used for scientific research
  • Apply your technical knowledge to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Serve as part of rotational teams that may require on-call duties to support the ongoing activities within the EIC project and as needed other projects within Jefferson Lab
  • Read and interpret drawings in areas such as electronics, mechanical, and cryogenic systems
  • Provide technical support for staff, users, and college students conducting research at Jefferson Lab
  • Utilize basic computer knowledge to carryout daily functions, e.g., check/send emails, fill out timesheet, order tools/parts, complete web-based training, etc.

Qualifications We Require: (TECH I)

Education:

  • HS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience:

  • 2 years relevant experience in a related technical field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates basic skills, knowledge and ability in one technology trade or specialty
  • May have basic skills, knowledge and ability in other technologies
  • Limited judgment required to complete assignments

Qualifications We Require: (TECH II)

Education:

  • HS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience:

  • 5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good oral and written skills (e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings), including the ability to effectively explain work to their supervisor and others in the group
  • Work effectively on individual tasks and as a member of a team
  • Proficient in the use of non-powered and battery-powered hand tools
  • Ability to safely execute well-defined tasks under general supervision of supervisor or an experienced technician
  • Ability to easily adapt to a changing work environment

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with material handling equipment, e.g., pallet jacks, forklifts, cranes, etc.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical/electronic systems
