What your job will be like:

The System Engineer will work in a small group, developing polarized material for physics experiments. The candidate will support the engineering effort for a polarized fusion project (the JLab SPF project), a multi-lab Department of Energy effort which will help to pave the road towards a viable fusion power reactor. The candidate will collaborate with colleagues at Jefferson Lab and our partner labs at the University of Virginia, Oak Ridge National Lab, University of California-Irvine and General Atomics on the overall systems engineering/technical integration efforts for the project.

In this role you will:

  • Work with scientists, technical staffs and students developing new concepts. Collaborate with the JLab target group to design/construct/commission cryogenic equipment related to the polarized fusion project.
  • Work with scientists and engineers to develop and document requirements, specifications and interfaces for the JLab SPF project
  • Serve as a Design Authority for the pressure systems required for the JLab SPF project
  • Responsible for Target Group’s cryostat work
  • Work with engineering colleagues in the collaboration-wide effort to develop project integration plans
  • Support project reviews and reporting by providing and presenting information on engineering aspect.
  • Write professional correspondence, technical papers, presentations, and documents in accordance with Lab and project guidelines for audiences of project team members, Lab leadership, and/or the Department of Energy

Qualifications we require:

Education:

  • BS in Engineering or Physics

Experience:

  • 4 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively train his/her work group and effectively lead work teams within the work group
  • Demonstrated experience in technical writing of plans, reports, and presentations, and the ability to give effective presentations to general audiences and write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for lab consumption
  • Working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis codes and familiarity with the ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).
  • Experience developing and monitoring requirements and interfaces
  • Familiar with systems engineering and procedures

Qualifications we prefer:

Education:

  • Master's degree in cryogenics engineering or similar field

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience working with cryogenic systems, with at least two years of experience as a cryogenic engineering professional is highly desi
  • Industry-standard certifications in mechanical engineering or related fields
  • Familiarity with the technology and national labs projects involving fusion energy
