What your job will be like:
This position provides technical leadership for the laboratory’s Radiation Control (RadCon) programs, including personnel and area dosimetry, radiological training, and radioanalytical laboratory support. The incumbent will oversee regulatory compliance, procedure development, quality assurance audits, and interpretation of radiological data, while mentoring and supervising RadCon staff. The position requires a subject matter expert for evaluating radiological impacts and supporting continuous improvement through corrective actions and lessons learned. Specific assignments include group leader level responsibilities for several program elements of the radiation control program and ability to act as the Radiation Control Manager when needed. The position involves radiologically challenging, time sensitive tasks with regulatory constraints.
In this role you will:
- Oversee the dosimetry program and act as the technical lead for the external dosimetry program.
- Ensure radiological training program aligns with laboratory mission needs while maintaining regulatory compliance and consistency with best practices. Provide mentorship and training to staff within the radiation control department.
- Lead staff in the support of the RadCon radioanalytical lab, including equipment maintenance, calibration and quality assurance.
- Write, revise and manage RadCon procedures, manuals, technical bases and other documentation needed to support the programs under your cognizance, ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and other guiding documents.
- Perform periodic QA audits in assigned areas of RadCon activities. Develop corrective action plans and provide input to lessons learned program.
- Serve as lead in evaluation of radiological impact associated with new and/or anomalous conditions.
Qualifications We Require:
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in a scientific/engineering field
- Advanced degree in relevant field is preferred
Licenses:
- Certified Health Physicist (CHP) conferred by the American Board of Health Physics is required upon hire
Experience:
- 10 or more years' experience in Health Physics or Radiological Engineering
- 5 or more years' experience at DOE facility or within a research environment
- Experience as a technical lead in dosimetry, radioanalytical laboratories, training, or operational health physics/radiological engineering
- Experience in Accelerator Health Physics, excellent technical expertise in one or more specific areas of radiation protection
- Demonstrated leadership at the project level
- Experience managing multiple projects and tasks
- Established track record of completing complex projects, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences and other signs of recognition by the radiation protection community is expected
- Experience at a DOE high-energy accelerator facility is preferred
- Experience in the area of training development and delivery, specifically with respect to the DOE Radiological Control Technologist (RCT) and Radiological Worker programs preferred
Experience and Education Exchange:
Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of methods and principles used in personnel dosimetry systems and familiarity with DOE requirements related to such systems
- Broad working knowledge of DOE regulations and directives related to radiation safety
- Knowledge of DOE standards for training development and job/task analysis
- Familiarity with radiation detection instrumentation and methods used to measure complex radiation fields
- Knowledge of laboratory analytical techniques used to characterize and quantify radionuclides from environmental and process samples
- Familiarity with small group leadership and personnel management principles
