The Head of Nuclear Physics Computing and Software identifies and develops computational projects critical to the success of the Jefferson Lab CEBAF and EIC Science Program. Manages scientific computing activities to ensure effective execution of the program. Manages computing domain experts in the CST division to develop software and hardware solutions to meet the simulation, data acquisition, analysis, and storage requirements of the science programs.

In this role you will:

  • Lead teams of experts in scientific computing to meet the mission needs of EIC and 12 GeV science. This includes supplying hardware and software services to the Nuclear Physics Theory and Experimental programs. The functions of the groups include software development as well as recommending third party software packages and advanced technologies in support of nuclear physics.
  • Work closely with groups in Computing, Networking, and Infrastructure to ensure timely deployment and reliable operation of the computing equipment. Provide consistent technical leadership and foster a professional and best practices mentality. Develop staffing plans that meet the growing program.
  • Serve as a CST point of contact with the Jefferson Lab experimental halls and the EIC. Work with the Jefferson Lab and EIC communities to plan and provision appropriate computing platforms, software packages, software tools, and applications.
  • Coordinate JLAB nuclear physics computing by understanding scientific, technical, and computational landscape for the programs.
  • Maintain direct technical control of at least one forward going project of benefit to EIC and 12GeV. Support strategic laboratory initiatives.
  • Serve as an advocate for Jefferson Lab scientific computing on the national and international stage. Maintain knowledge about trends in computing in the broader physics community including High Energy Physics and other Nuclear Physics Facilities.
  • Lead scientific computing for nuclear physics workshops and reviews.
  • Be a resource for internal and external committees and reviews.

Qualifications We Require:


  • Master's Degree in Physics or Computer Science.


  • 12 Years experience or the equivalent combination of education, experience, and relevant training.

      Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

        • Demonstrated knowledge of computational infrastructure and applications applicable to large scale experimental facilities.
        • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage scientific computing projects.
        • Prior direct experience developing computing solutions for the Jefferson Lab Nuclear Physics Program.
        • Ability to interact across organizational levels including senior leadership and effectively form partnerships.
        • Must possess exceptional written and oral communication skills.

        Qualifications We Desire:

        • Ph.D. in Physics
