What your job will be like:

As a Cryogenic Process Lead at Jefferson Lab, you will be the part of the senior engineering staff leading cryogenic process within the Cryogenics Engineering Department. The engineer will lead other junior process engineers in support of various exciting cryogenic projects and existing cryogenic system. These projects can include the design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of large-scale 2 Kelvin and 4 Kelvin helium refrigeration systems that include: cold and warm compression systems, cold boxes, pumping systems, cryogenic fluid transfer systems, pressure vessels and large utility support systems for cooling water, power utilities and gas management/storage.

In this role, you will:

  • Direct the work of other process engineers and interacting with other design engineers as well as operation engineers and technicians for the design, installation, and commissioning efforts for one of several 2/4K refrigeration projects that the Department has in progress.
  • Review and guide junior process engineers in cryogenic department.
  • Work planning, execution, progress assessment for the cryogenic process engineering
  • Establish a close interaction with mechanical and electrical engineering leads
  • Generate ideas to optimize cryogenic processes and implement the ideas in ongoing projects
  • Involve in day-to-day operations of large refrigeration systems supporting JLab operations and testing so that this experience can be translated into new system designs.
  • Support cryogenic on-call duties for existing five refrigerators if needed.

Qualifications We Require:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree is minimally acceptable from an accredited university

Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience necessary in area of cryogenic engineering related to helium liquefiers/refrigerators, distribution systems, or closely related industries such as air separation.
  • Extensive experience and background in providing the process design and optimization ideas of equipment related to the production and distribution of cryogenic fluids, plant layouts of such equipment, and supporting utilities is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to communicate clearly in writing (e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings) and explain work to their supervisor and others in the group
  • Can work effectively with peers
  • Can work independently and productively and can interact with lab management, other engineers and external stakeholders

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master’s degree or higher is preferred in any applicable Engineering or Physics disciplines
  • Ability to develop system requirements documents with follow-on procurement specifications that address the relevant load requirements and operational conditions is preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience and project management experience including cost, schedule and resource planning is preferred.
