Are you looking for an opportunity to join a world-renowned scientific team? As a member of the Target Group, you will support the construction, installation, and maintenance efforts, which provides a variety of fixed target systems for the lab’s program of experimental nuclear physics. Working under minimal supervision, and as part of a team, you will fabricate components, assemble the target system and transport it to the experimental hall in preparation for upcoming experiments. You will also maintain and repairs target equipment and assists in the general upkeep and maintenance of the group’s fabrication and testing facilities. Coordinates work internally with other members of the Target Group and externally with JLab staff such as EHS&Q personal and the Hall Work Coordinators.

In This Role You Will:

  • Working from drawings, written or verbal instructions, fabricate or procure items at the component level.
  • Working alone or as part of a team, piece components into subassemblies, and subassemblies into the final target assembly.
  • Assist in the transport, installation, and removal of target systems and equipment to and from the experimental halls.
  • Repair and maintain equipment in the Target Group facilities and in the experimental halls.
  • At the direction of Target Group scientists and engineers, perform and document tests of components and subassemblies. Support testing of full target assemblies.
  • Assist in the upkeep and maintenance of equipment and resources in the Target Group’s fabrication and testing facilities. Maintain tools, supplies and spare parts sufficient to ensure the group can fulfill its mission.
  • Utilize basic computer knowledge to perform daily functions, e.g. email, timesheets, purchase requisitions, web-based training etc.
  • Advise and provide technical support for staff, users, and students conducting research with the Target Group or in the four experimental halls at Jefferson Lab. Mentor and direct junior technical staff

Qualifications We Require:

Education, Certifications

  • A high school degree and,

Experience:

  • 5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively, both as an individual and as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate clearly with others and explain work to other team members via verbal and written explanations, drawings, memos, etc.
  • Ability to read and comprehend 2D mechanical drawings and process and instrumentation drawings (P&ID)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with basic hand and power tools such as drills, saws, grinders, sanders, etc.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following:
  • Metal working with standard shop tools (mills, lathes, presses, etc)
  • Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)
  • Pipefitting
  • High vacuum systems
  • Cryogenics
  • Welding
