What your job will be like:

The Radio Frequency (RF) group leader provides management and technical oversight for a team of engineers and technicians supporting accelerator operations, and other lab initiatives. The role will also work with customers to develop planning, cost, and schedules to maintain reliable RF systems to support accelerator operations, address obsolescence issues, and lead state-of-the-art High Power RF (HPRF) and Low Level RF (LLRF) controls development.

In this role, you will:

  • Carry out day-to-day operations of the RF group. Develop strategies to increase productivity and increase motivation through thoughtful work assignments within RF.
  • Maintain an understanding of the Accelerator operations requirements for machine operations. Ensure group resources are assigned sufficiently to meet the goals of the program.
  • Manage the group annual work plan and budget. Ensure resources are properly assigned to maintain machine operations within budget. Recognize and communicate resource issues during the group’s work planning process.
  • Lead the development of new RF equipment (HPRF and LLRF) that: resolves obsolescence issues with existing equipment, and provides new or enhanced RF capabilities to accelerator physicists.
  • Guide engineers in the development and troubleshooting of hardware and software used to support machine operations.
  • Evaluate and develop strategies to address yearly HPRF and LLRF system problems, repairs, maintenance, and other issues related to system performance.
  • Stay abreast of accelerator RF development (HPRF and LLRF) at other labs through personal relationships, workshops, and conferences.
  • Encourage engineering staff to share and collaborate our RF engineering expertise on relevant projects
  • Work with Accelerator Engineering Systems management to develop strategies that address RF performance improvement and obsolescence needs for the CEBAF accelerator, experimental halls, and other lab initiatives.
  • Ensure projects are developed with relevant stakeholder involvement, reviewed at appropriate stages, and documented upon completion. Ensure equipment turn over meets the needs of our customers during acceptance testing. Maintain RF equipment over its lifecycle.
  • Analyze accelerator downtime weekly and work with accelerator operability to increase machine availability/reliability. Investigate reports of defective, damaged, or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment, or systems to determine the nature and scope of the problem.
  • Ensure the RF group follows all ES&H electrical safety requirements. Ensure the group maintains all required training and provide feedback to improve the safety as appropriate. Foster a culture of safety within the group.

Candidate will be required to assist in the coordination off-hour accelerator emergency repairs to support 24-hour a day operation of the accelerator.

Qualifications We Require:


  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics


    • 15 years of relevant experience with electrical engineering systems.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Background in electrical engineering, especially in a scientific or technical environment.
    • Proven experience managing or supervising groups (people) and technical projects (>$250k).
    • The ideal candidate will be an accomplished expert in accelerator RF applications (RF power and/or Low Level RF controls), demonstrated through conference and journal papers.
    • Solid knowledge of electrical circuits and systems. Individual will be a system expert in one of the following areas, RF/Microwave electronics, RF Power systems, Low Level RF (control theory, Digital design) or Analog/power electronics.
    • Demonstrated ability to compose and publish research work in journals and conference proceedings.

    Qualifications We Desire:
