What your job will be like:
Are you a skilled, self-motivated individual ready to provide a "laser" focus on accelerator components and system design and engineering? As a Mechanical Engineer, you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of designers, technicians, engineers, and scientists in the design and testing of instrumental systems in the performance of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project, and accelerators worldwide. We are open to filling this position at the Staff Engineer (SE) II or III level based on field experience.

In this role you will:

  • Design and analyze systems and components employed in particle accelerators systems to include; SRF components, cryomodules, normal conducting magnets, superconducting magnets, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, cooling water systems, gas systems, precision alignment elements, and equipment support structures
  • Perform engineering analyses including heat transfer, fluid flow, vibration, and stress analysis
  • Utilize CAE tools such as finite element analysis software (ANSYS)
  • Design systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including: ASME piping, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes, and JLab Pressure and Vacuum System Rules
  • Present technical status reports, defend designs at engineering design and safety reviews
  • Serve as the responsible technical representative for the design, procurement, and fabrication of components and systems
  • Document the final design, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of assigned systems

This position may be hired at either the SEII or SEIII level based on criteria below.

Qualifications We Require:

Education and Experience:

SE II

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related scientific field and 4 years of relevant work experience in the design, analysis, and fabrication of complex mechanical systems in an SRF or related field

SE III

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related scientific field and 10 years of relevant work experience in the design, analysis, and fabrication of complex mechanical systems in an SRF or related field

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

SE II

  • Able to effectively train his/her work group and effectively lead work teams within the work group.
  • Able to give effective presentations to general audiences and write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material

SE III

  • Able to effectively train people outside of assigned work group.
  • Able to give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams
  • Able to write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred (SE II / SE III)
  • Experience in large-scale accelerator projects or facilities is highly desirable (SE II / SE III)
  • Experience in leading a project with cost and schedule responsibilities (SE III)
